Carter G. Woodson, the “Father of Black History,” worked and lived at 1538 9th Street from 1922 until 1950. He was the son of former slaves who went on to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard, an acclaimed scholar, educator, and advocate. He organized Negro History Week (later became Black History Month). He often walked through the Shaw neighborhood carrying stacks of books. Local children called him “Bookman”.
