(from the guide): St. Stephen and the Incarnation church was the first racially integrated Episcopal church in the city. During the controversial tenure of Father William Wendt, St. Stephens also became known for its political activism.
The parish even acquired its own jester, Yale graduate Carlos Van Leer. Wendt and others prayed with peace fasters on the steps of the Justice Department for slain Black Panthers.
