"The Nest in Which the Egg Was Hatched" is a quote by President Andrew Johnson. Mary Surratt's boarding house was located at 604 H Street, NW in Washington DC. Surratt was a Confederate sympathizer with a son serving in the Confederate Army. Her son was friends with John Wilkes Booth who was conspiring to assassinate President Lincoln. Although there was never a formal meeting here, President Andrew Johnson reflected a popular belief in calling Surratt's boarding house "the nest in which the egg was hatched."
