DC Meat-Free Week

Meat-filled images formed the nightmares of Ellyn’s childhood. Today, separated by the distance of years and a vegetarian diet, Ellyn’s paintings lend a darkly humorous twist to the subject of our consumption and use of animals. In a series of paintings inspired by DC Meat-Free Week, Ellyn invites viewers to reconsider the every day. Pieces give a new meaning to ubiquitous phrases, lending a comically sinister meaning to “baby back ribs” and turning “pig in a blanket” on its head.  Ellyn has also specially created a series of small paintings for the closing event. These pieces, which she has dubbed “small plates,” ask the viewer to “Look Me In the Eye and Tell Me I’m Delicious.

Dana Ellyn donated 15% of sales from the March 1 closing to benefit The Kindness Collective, a DC-based not-for-profit organization that works at the intersection of human and animal welfare. The Kindness Collective is currently working to change the emergency shelter system to house survivors of domestic violence with their pets. Up to 40% of domestic violence victims report that they are unable to escape their abusers because they are afraid of what will happen to their pets when they leave, and pets left behind are often abused or killed.
