The house at 1333 R Street once belonged to James Lesesne Wells - and African American artist of the Harlem Renaissance. He was well known for creating block prints about negro life. Next door, at 1327 R Street is the former Mu-So-Lit Clubhouse - a gathering place for prominent African American men of the day. W.E.B. Du Bois was an honorary member.
