The internationally acclaimed artist Alma Thomas, known for her abstract oil paintings, lived at 1530 15th Street NW. Thomas was the first graduate of Howard University’s Art Department (1924) and earned an M.A. from Columbia University. She taught art at Shaw Junior High School for 35 years.
This painting was inspired by Thomas’ famous work, “Iris Tulips Jonquils and Crocuss” … using the title of her painting to illustrate more literally what her color abstract work suggested with daubs of color.
